The Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud (SE) is a complete edition of the works of Freud in English. It was translated from the German under the general editorship of James Strachey in collaboration with Anna Freud, assisted by Alix Strachey and Alan Tyson. The twenty-four volumes were originally published by the Hogarth Press in London, 1953–1974. Unlike the German Gesammelte Werke (S. Fischer Verlage 18 volumes; 1940-68), the SE contains indispensable critical and historical notes by the editors. This editorial material was later included in the Studienausgabe, the German critical edition, though it is incomplete (S. Fischer Verlage, 12 volumes; 1969-75). Although the SE is by far the best edition, as a translation it has been contentious and for this reason recourse to the original German can prove extremely worthwhile.

The SE is available online at PEP (see below) but it requires subscription or institutional membership: PEP | Browse

Leader, D. (2000). Freud’s Footnotes. London: Faber & Faber.

In this book Darian Leader brings to life debates in the history and theory of psychoanalysis, opening up new perspectives on areas that are all too often taken for granted. Leader explores the questions that preoccupied Freud and his followers. He shows how their theories were formed and modified, and situates their contributions in the history of ideas. Contexts and influences, revisions and apparently insignificant details are brought to the foreground in an important study which is characteristically profound, witty and persuasive.
